Better Feature Film Starring Tom Hopper and Laura Hopper.

In Better, Tom Hopper delivers a compelling dual performance as Henry and his newfound identical twin brother, Patrick, two men whose lives could not appear more different.

Henry is trapped in a failing marriage, stuck in a job that leaves him unfulfilled, and struggling to find any sense of purpose or direction. Still reeling from the recent death of his estranged father, he finds himself at a personal crossroads, burdened by unresolved grief, regret, and the growing realisation that his life has not turned out the way he had hoped.

Just as everything begins to unravel, Henry discovers Patrick, the twin brother he never knew existed, whose seemingly effortless success and charmed existence offer a stark contrast to his own unhappiness.

Initially, their reunion presents Henry with the possibility of connection, belonging, and perhaps even a second chance at life. However, as the brothers begin to reconnect, Henry’s fascination with Patrick gradually develops into something far more unsettling. Increasingly consumed by comparisons between their lives, he becomes fixated on the opportunities, relationships, and apparent advantages his brother possesses. What begins as curiosity soon gives way to envy, resentment, and an increasingly fragile sense of identity. As Henry struggles to reconcile the life he has with the life he believes he could have had, his emotional stability begins to deteriorate, blurring the boundaries between admiration and obsession.

The discovery of a long-lost twin becomes the catalyst for a deeply unsettling psychological descent, as buried insecurities surface and Henry is forced to confront the darker aspects of his own nature. Better explores the complexities of identity, sibling rivalry, grief, and the destructive power of comparison, asking how well we can ever truly know ourselves when confronted with the possibility of being someone else.

Sound Design and Full Mix

All post-production audio for Better was expertly delivered by Syncbox, encompassing the complete sound post-production process, including dialogue mixing, music editing, ADR editing, Foley mixing, and the final mix in both Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround sound. Working collaboratively with specialist sound teams, Bam Bam Audio recorded the Foley, bringing a detailed layer of physical realism and texture to the world of the drama, while Forever Audio hosted the ADR sessions and final mix, ensuring a cohesive and immersive sonic experience across the production.

One of the central creative challenges was shaping the vocal performances of Tom Hopper, who plays both Henry and his newly discovered identical twin, Patrick. The sound treatment required a particularly delicate approach: the brothers needed to sound unmistakably related, with almost identical vocal characteristics, while retaining just enough distinction for the audience to identify them as separate individuals. Rather than relying on overt processing or artificial effects, the emphasis was on subtle variations in vocal tone, pitch, inflection, and delivery, allowing the performances themselves to establish each brother’s identity. These nuanced adjustments preserved the natural quality and emotional authenticity of Hopper’s acting while creating a clear, if understated, separation between the two characters.

This restraint was essential to maintaining the psychological credibility of the story. As Henry becomes increasingly consumed by his brother’s seemingly charmed existence, the subtle similarities between their voices reinforce their shared identity, while the carefully judged differences help distinguish their contrasting personalities and emotional states. The result is a soundscape that supports the tension and ambiguity at the heart of Better, allowing the audience to experience the brothers as two distinct characters who remain unnervingly alike. Through precise dialogue treatment, carefully crafted Foley, and an immersive final mix in Dolby Atmos and 5.1, the sound post-production enhances the drama’s psychological intensity without drawing attention away from the performances.
